As Katy-area students head back to the classroom, sports seasons are ramping up too — and that means it is time for the pre-participation physical. If your child plans to play a school sport, Texas UIL rules require one. Here is what the exam covers and why it matters.

What is a sports physical?

A sports physical, or pre-participation physical evaluation, is a focused checkup that confirms your child can safely take part in their sport. It is not the same as a full annual wellness visit, though we are glad to do both in one appointment.

Why it matters

The exam screens for issues that can turn dangerous during hard exercise — an undetected heart condition, exercise-induced asthma, a history of concussions, or joint problems that deserve attention before the season starts.

What we check

How to prepare

Bring the completed UIL medical history form signed by a parent, a list of any medications, and details about past injuries or surgeries. Knowing your family heart history is especially helpful.

Book early

Appointment slots fill quickly right before each season. Scheduling a couple of weeks ahead means any follow-up can happen without your child missing tryouts.
